North Enfield Cricket Club’s 2s failed to capitalise on a good start with the ball as they fell to a 113 run defeat at Tewin on Saturday.
The visitors were bowled out for 95 in their pursuit of 209 for victory, despite earlier having the hosts 57 - 6.
After captain David Brandon opted to bowl at the toss, Oliver Munt and Thomas Munt once again bowled well in tandem on a surface offering considerable assistance for the bowlers. T. Munt got the breakthrough with a stunning one-handed caught and bowled, before an O. Munt beauty removed the other Tewin opener. The hosts were soon in a spot of bother at 27 - 3, when William Munt caught a feather behind off the bowling of T. Munt.
The introduction of David Malleson and Paul Duke to the attack saw North Enfield turn the screw further, with Malleson picking up two wickets either side of one from Duke to reduce the hosts to 57 - 6 and put them in real trouble.
However, the Tewin captain came to the crease at the fall of the sixth wicket and launched an impressive counter-attack, passing 50 as he shared a stand of 95 with one of his teammates, before eventually ending up unbeaten on 91, as his side set North Enfield an imposing target of 209.
Any slim hopes of a North Enfield victory were swiftly extinguished, as the hosts bowled well to reduce them to 29 - 3. Brandon (26) and Garry Orton (7) dug in, but after they fell the writing was on the wall as the visistors slipped to 67 - 9. However, a last wicket partnership of 28 between Joe Murphy (13) and O. Munt (8*) saw North Enfield claim two batting points and come away from a difficult day with a reasonable 9 points, as they now look ahead to a home game against London Colney next weekend.
Elsewhere, North Enfield’s 1s succumbed to a 5 wicket defeat to Shenley Village at home, but on a lighter note Adam Jessop claimed the prize for ‘anything but a cricket bag’ week, with his washing line effort to bring his kit to the game.
Meanwhile on Sunday, a low scoring thriller saw Highgate Taverners run out winners by 2 wickets at Strayfield Road, despite three wickets apiece for Hannah Gilmore and Richard Sanders, and a 69 run partnership between Dan Gandy and Freddie Pearson.
