North Enfield Cricket Club’s 2s put in a complete all round performance to beat London Colney at Strayfield Road on Saturday and claim a second consecutive home victory.
The hosts bowled Colney out for 85 to beat the visitors and the British weather, after earlier posting an above par 172 - 7 from their 40 overs.
North Enfield were put into bat on a pitch offering some inconsistent bounce, but got off to a steady start through openers William Munt and David Brandon.
The fall of a couple of quick wickets saw the need for a rebuild, which Stuart Halley and W. Munt started, before the latter continued it with Paul Duke. The pair continued to knock the ball around and punish any loose deliveries, as they ticked North Enfield’s score towards 100.
Duke (27) was bowled with the partnership at 49, but W. Munt passed 50 soon after and was joined at the crease by Richard Lee. W. Munt (58) was then run out coming back for two, but Lee (29*) and the North Enfield lower order accelerated impressively and boosted the hosts up to a very imposing target of 173.
The visitors never really looked like chasing down North Enfield’s total, as the hosts started with the ball and in the field as they had finished with the bat. Oliver Munt claimed their first, as a mistimed shot was well caught at gully by Stuart Halley, before W. Munt stumped the other opener off Joe Murphy.
Murphy then claimed the crucial breakthrough via a juggling catch from Lee and from then on it was plain sailing for North Enfield. David Malleson entered the attack and bowled yet another probing spell, in which he picked up four wickets, before Duke’s three wickets cleaned up the tail to seal an 87 run victory for North Enfield and cap an outstanding performance.
Elsewhere, North Enfield’s 1s received 10 points after their game at Hitchin was abandoned due to the weather, whilst a second successive Sunday friendly went down to the wire at Strayfield Road, with Tom Coughlan (20*) and Adam Jessop (7*) guiding North Enfield to a dramatic five wicket victory in the final over.
