North Enfield Cricket Club’s 2s blew away Baldock’s batting line-up on Saturday at Strayfield Road to claim their first victory of the season.
Four wickets apiece for Oliver Munt and David Malleson, as well as two for Thomas Munt, saw North Enfield bowl out their visitors for just 22, in reply to their first innings total of 195, to claim a 173 run victory.
Captain David Brandon lost his first toss of the season and North Enfield were put into bat on a surface that offered some assistance to the bowlers and were soon in all sorts of trouble, after crumbling to 40 - 5.
However, at this point Richard Lee joined James Scott in the middle and the pair started to ease North Enfield’s troubles, with Lee playing the anchor role and allowing Scott to counter attack. The pair’s partnership soon passed 50 and Scott then reached his own half century in no time.
By the time Scott eventually departed (79), North Enfield were well on course for 200 and his partnership with Lee (37) had stretched beyond 100. Some good lower order batting eventually saw the hosts reach 195 - 9 from their 40 overs.
Any hope that Baldock had of chasing down North Enfield’s target was swiftly diminished by a sensational spell of bowling from Oliver Munt and Oliver Scott. Both moved the ball considerably and while O. Scott went wicketless, he helped his opening partner to restrict the run rate and run through the visitors’ top order in a breath-taking spell of 4 - 5.
With Baldock reeling at 11 - 4, the introduction of David Malleson removed any doubt from the equation, as he bowled four maidens in the process of picking up four wickets to claim unbelievable figures of 4 - 0. The writing was well and truly on the well when Thomas Munt, not to be surpassed by his younger brother, claimed the final two wickets, one courtesy of a stunning one handed slip catch from Andrew Pearson, to put the seal on an impressive all round performance and victory from North Enfield.
Elsewhere, North Enfield’s 1s fell to an unfortunate 83 run defeat at Cheshunt Rosedale, whilst Sunday’s 70th anniversary match at Strayfield Road against Ferme Park came to a thrilling conclusion with Oliver Munt and Richard Sanders batting out the final three overs to secure a dramatic draw for North Enfield.
